How CAD Students Get Started on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

Sander Kallissaar

Solution Manager

When introducing any new technology into the classroom, one of the first goals is helping students feel confident enough to begin using it. The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform provides a complete environment for managing projects, accessing learning resources, and connecting engineering tools, but students don’t need to learn every feature on day one.

By focusing on a few key tools and workflows, educators can help students quickly become comfortable with the platform and establish good engineering practices from the start.

Organize Course Materials in the Bookmark Editor

The Bookmark Editor is often the first application students should become familiar with.

Bookmarks serve as organised collections of course content. This makes it easy for students to locate assignments, project files, reference materials, and supporting documentation. Instead of searching across multiple locations, students can access everything they need from a single, structured environment.

A well-organised bookmark structure also makes it easier for educators to distribute updated materials while maintaining consistency across a class.

Help Students Access Resources More Efficiently

Engineering courses typically include a variety of file types, including PDFs, images, presentations, CAD models, and instructional documents.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform allows many of these resources to be previewed directly within the platform. This reduces the need for downloads and helping students quickly access information when they need it.

This approach keeps learning materials connected to the project environment. It also encourages students to work within a single ecosystem rather than juggling multiple tools and storage locations.

Introduce Engineering Data Management Early

Many students enter a design or engineering programme with experience saving files locally on their computers. While this approach works for simple projects, professional product development requires more structured methods for managing data.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform introduces students to concepts that are commonly used throughout industry. This includes organised data management, controlled access to project information, and centralised collaboration.

Early exposure to these practices helps students develop habits that will benefit them throughout both their education and future careers.

Create a More Connected Learning Experience

When students can access course resources, project information, and CAD tools from a connected environment, they spend less time navigating software and more time learning.

The integration between SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform helps create a smoother workflow that supports classroom instruction, independent learning, and project-based coursework.

As students move through their courses, these connected workflows become the foundation for more advanced engineering and product development activities.

Set Students Up for Success

Successful adoption of any platform starts with a positive first experience. By providing clear access to course materials, introducing essential applications, and helping students connect SOLIDWORKS to the platform, educators can reduce barriers to learning and improve student confidence.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform offers powerful capabilities, but students don’t need to master everything at once. With the right foundation in place, they can quickly become comfortable navigating the platform and focus on developing the engineering and design skills that matter most.

Surface wear is inevitable where contact occurs. Luckily, it can be simulated.

In SIMULIA Abaqus, you can simulate wear accumulation and understand your product's lifespan. In this example, Mikko, applied Archard’s wear model to examine surface erosion over time.

This simulation visualizes how contact conditions lead to material loss, helping engineers optimize the product further.
