Lauris Karklins and Maxim Foss from PLM Group hosted a webinar about the 5 most frequently asked questions we receive about Cloud CAD Security. Joining them was Cloud Industry Business Consultant from Dassault Systèmes, Elena Wu.
Together they touch upon topics of:
- Security Standards
- Authentication / the 3Dpassport Service
- Data Center Location
- Disaster Recovery Plan
- Security Operations Center
Read the Q&A from the webinar, it might answer your questions as well.

What is the difference between hot and cold backups?
The Dassault Systèmes Cloud teams who operate Dassault Systèmes Cloud environments have to ensure their high availability by relying on the following principles: hot backups are run every day, complemented by a weekly cold backup. This automated process is accompanied by supervision mechanisms allowing verification of the success of the backups. The difference between hot backups and cold backups is that a cold backup is a backup taken while the system or application is not running; on the other hand, a hot backup is a backup taken while the system or application is active and still running.
In an example of being a Nordic company travelling to Japan, when connecting to the closest data center, is the data copied from Paris to Japan?
The data is copied in a way that enables the Japanese data center to access to retrieve the data. Of course, is just a way of redirecting the data from one data center to the other. The data will not continue to be stored like that, it is temporary. And if you do not like the DFS (Distribution File Storage) to be activated, you can always deactivate that on your platform.
The data is copied to manage the data flow, to increase the performance.
How do you handle enterprise companies that have employees around the world? How is the data source to the data center handled?
This is a hot topic, as Dassault Systèmes has several big companies around the world. Currently, the data center is determined by where the enterprise has its main office. The closest data center to this will be the main data center. There is an ongoing conversation within Dassault Systèmes on how to improve this, both on a performance level, but there can also be some legislative restrictions to factor in.
Due to political circumstances around the world, can you opt out of having data in certain data centers?
Unfortunately, you can’t. Your company will be connected to the closest data center. However, if you are traveling, you can choose not to activate the DFS (Distribution File Storage), and your data will not be copied temporarily to a different data center than the main one you are connected to.
What is 3DEXPERIENCE storage going to look like in +10 years?
Dassault Systèmes is constantly working and discussing the future and how everything evolves. There is a long-term strategy in place, however, it cannot be disclosed here.
But there is ongoing work happening to improve performance, experience, and prepare for what the future will bring.
