How To Access Simulation Tools in SOLIDWORKS Connected

Christoffer Stokkebro Sørensen

Customer Success Engineer

If you’ve been using SOLIDWORKS Connected on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform you might have wondered if you are limited to static simulations. While this was previously true, the 2024 general availability release offers more simulation options. Let’s explore these new capabilities and the steps you can take to expand your simulation toolkit in SOLIDWORKS Connected.

See the video below for a visual guide of how to access the simulation tools available with SOLIDWORKS Connected.

Simulation Tools in SOLIDWORKS Desktop

The SOLIDWORKS Desktop platform offers a comprehensive range of simulation tools designed to meet different engineering needs:

  • SOLIDWORKS Simulation Standard, Professional, and Premium: These packages enable you to conduct structural analysis on your CAD models using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation: Allows for the simulation of liquid or gas flow through and around your CAD models using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • SOLIDWORKS Plastics: Simulates the injection molding process, helping to optimize part and mold designs.
  • SOLIDWORKS Motion: Provides tools for performing motion studies on your designs, simulating real-world physical behaviors.

What About Simulation in SOLIDWORKS Connected?

Prior to the 2024 general availability (GA) release, the only available simulation product for SOLIDWORKS Connected was the 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS Simulation Designer role. This role allowed users to perform static structural analysis studies. This was similar to what you would find in the SOLIDWORKS Desktop Premium package.

However, things have changed with the recent updates to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform:

  1. FD1 Platform Update: This update allowed users to connect a SOLIDWORKS Simulation Standard, Professional, or Premium license to their SOLIDWORKS Connected installation. This integration unlocked more advanced simulation capabilities within SOLIDWORKS Connected.
  2. FD2 Platform Update: The setup and activation of SOLIDWORKS Simulation and SOLIDWORKS Motion licenses were integrated directly into the installer for SOLIDWORKS Connected. This update simplified the process, making it easier for users to get started with simulations.

Current Limitations and Future Enhancements

Despite these enhancements, SOLIDWORKS Connected still lacks support for some of the more advanced simulation tools available in the desktop version, such as:

  • SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation
  • SOLIDWORKS Plastics

However, these features are expected to be supported in future updates (FD updates) later this year. In the meantime, users can opt for one of the Simulia roles on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. These roles offer the same capabilities as SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation and Plastics. In addition, they have the added advantage of supporting more complex simulation studies.

Explore More Simulation Options

If you’re looking for advanced simulation capabilities beyond static structural analysis, consider exploring the Simulia roles available on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. These roles are powerful alternatives that offer enhanced functionality compared to traditional SOLIDWORKS Simulation tools.

While SOLIDWORKS Connected currently focuses on static simulations, recent updates are expanding its capabilities to align more closely with the desktop version. As new features roll out, you can expect even more robust simulation tools to become available. Keep an eye on future updates to maximize the potential of your SOLIDWORKS Connected experience.

Faster, smoother and more efficiently than ever. T Faster, smoother and more efficiently than ever. That how the CNC machines at Rasi Maskinfabrik run these days. ⚙️📊

The team swapped out their CAM system when their previous one fell short as complexity increased and they had to turn down customer jobs.

Now, they take on all kinds of advanced projects. Meanwhile, they see shorter setup times AND are able to customize quickly - without compromising on quality. 🌟

The switch to SolidCAM has significantly impacted the bottom line - in a good way.

💡 The key takeaway? It wouldn't have been possible without the right combination of CAD-integrated CAM, post processors and support.
