SOLIDWORKS PLM FAQ
To make an informed choice about SOLIDWORKS PLM, you need all the relevant information.
Here are the answers to the questions we are asked most frequently.
What is the difference between Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software?
PDM software manages product development data, primarily within the engineering department – the “what” of product development such as documents, CAD files, etc. PLM manages product development data and processes, taking a more comprehensive approach to the entire lifecycle of a product – adding the “why” and “how” of product development, factoring design, engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, supply chain and project management considerations into the process.
Does Cloud-based PLM have the same capabilities as a traditional on-premise PLM?
Cloud-based PLM has the same capabilities as a traditional on-premise PLM but the difference is that the Cloud-based PLM can easily scale with the size of your team and needs. You can start with as much PLM functionality as you require, and then add features as your needs increase. In addition, there are no servers to install, configure and maintain, which significantly reduces your IT overhead and costs. Cloud-based PLM provides out-of-the-box PLM tools and secure access to domestic, global, and remote teams, from any location, increasing security at reduced cost for any size company across all industries.
How does Cloud based PLM software ensure data security and access control?
Dassault Systemes and SOLIDWORKS approach risk management in a multi-faceted way, based on best practices and designed to proactively anticipate security threats in all aspects of our operations. Our ISO-certified management systems power our reliable and scalable cloud platform with state-of-the-art security practices – critical enablers of our business success. Does SOLIDWORKS PLM connect to SOLIDWORKS Design?
Our SOLIDWORKS PLM connects to SOLIDWORKS Design and other CAD tools, allowing you to easily collaborate, update projects, share data and feedback across your organization, without leaving your CAD interface.

“Previously, this structure and synchronization existed only on the drawing side. We’re now also setting up various review workflows, which we’re currently introducing to our colleagues.”
